Today I went up to Rigi Kulm, which I had wanted to visit for a long time. I took the Rigi mountain railroad (the first mountain railroad in Europe in 1871) from Arth-Goldau on the north side of Rigi Kulm (viewpoint: 1798m), which is about 30 minutes by train from Lucerne, to the summit. The train was going up to the summit in parallel with the mountain railway from the south side at the intermediate station. It was another clear day, and from the top of the triangular pyramid, the 360° panorama of the lake and the mountains of the Bernese Oberland was spectacular. However, it was a bit crowded for Switzerland.
After enjoying the view, we walked down to Fitznau (Vitznau), the base station of the southern mountain railway. The trail was gentle up to the halfway point, but when we reached the halfway point, the steep, slippery descent with many pebbles made my legs and back exhausted. Perhaps we made a mistake at the fork in the trail (8.9km,3.10). It was another hot day, so much so that I bought something cold to drink at a supermarket while waiting for the bus after descending the mountain. There is no train service here, so we took a bus to Küssnacht (Küssnacht am Rigi) and took a train back to Lucerne.
Walking distance: 17.2 Km
